Semana Santa

Also spelled: la Santa

Definition

Holy Week, when Catholics commemorate the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday; it falls in March or April. Good Friday is a national holiday, marked by processions across the country and the tradition of eating fish instead of meat. It is also the week when the capital empties out and the interior and the beaches fill up: alcohol sales are usually banned on certain days, many businesses close, and finding a place to stay without a reservation is nearly impossible.
