Canal de Panamá

Definition
The interoceanic waterway opened in 1914, under U.S. administration until December 31, 1999, when it passed to Panamanian hands under the Torrijos-Carter Treaties. Expanded in 2016 with a third set of locks. It is the axis of the national economy and identity.
