Zona del Canal
Also spelled: la Zona · Canal Zone
Definition
A strip of territory roughly 8 km on either side of the Canal, administered by the United States from 1903 to 1979. It had its own police, schools, currency and legal system, and split the country in two. Its existence is the key to understanding twentieth-century Panamanian nationalism.
