Tratado Hay–Bunau-Varilla

Definition

The treaty signed in November 1903 granting the United States control of the Canal strip "in perpetuity". It was signed by Philippe Bunau-Varilla, a French citizen acting on Panama's behalf: no Panamanian signed it, and from there begins a century of sovereignty claims.
