Ferrocarril de Panamá

Also spelled: el ferrocarril transístmico

Definition

Completed in 1855, it was the world's first interoceanic railroad. Driven by the California gold rush, it was built by workers brought from the Caribbean, China, Ireland and India, many of whom died on the job. Modern Panama starts here: transit as a business, and the mixing of peoples as its consequence.
